WINONA LAKE (Fri., Jan. 2, 2009) - Despite shooting only 30 percent from the field at 36 percent at the line, the Couriers beat the host Lakeland Christian Cougars 32-29 in the Cougar Classic Friday afternoon.
The Couriers trailed only twice in the game but struggled to find any rhythm. Evan Stutzman scored 9 points and Jesse Yoder 8 in the win.
Chris Valentine paced the Cougars (4-5) with 11 points.
WINONA LAKE (Sat., Jan. 3, 2009) - The Huntington Eagles scored 11 of the game's final 13 points to break a 38-38 tie to dump the Couriers 49-40 in a midday game.
After trailing 25-19 at the half, the Couriers had rallied to take a 32-31 lead late in the third quarter. Colin Featherston scored a field goal at :40 to give the Eagles a 33-32 lead at the break. The Couriers got baskets from Dustin Yoder and Jordan Bontrager to take leads of 34-33 and 36-35.
Kolby Shultz's second three gave the Eagles a 38-36 lead with 5:45 left. Evan Stutzman then tied the score but Jesse Yoder's two free throws at 3:27 would be the only other points for the Couriers.
Jesse Yoder finished with 13 points, Stutzman 12 and Bontrager 10 for the Couriers. The Eagles, 16-1 and tournament champions with a 3-0 record, got 15 points from tourney MVP Featherston and 11 each from all-tourney member Shultz and Matt Weaver.
In a late afternoon contest, the Couriers outscored the Trinity Titans 22-10 in the fourth quarter before succumbing 54-51.
Trinity (9-3) led 44-29 at the last stop but narrowily avoided overtime when Dustin Yoder's three-point attempt at the buzzer was waved off.
Other than an early 2-2 tie, the Titans led the entire game. The Couriers connected on 9-of-16 field goals, including two treys by Stutzman and one by Dustin Yoder, in the final period.
Stutzman tallied 17 points for the Couriers. He was named to the all-tourney team along with Jesse Yoder, who contributed 12 against the Titans.
Nick Scott carried the Titans with 36 points, all but 5 in the first three quarters. No other Titan scored more than 6 points.
The Couriers, now 5-5, get their next chance at a win Tuesday at Granger Christian. Fierce rivals for many years, the two schools have played only once in the last five years. The Couriers beat the Knights 61-50 February 28, 2008 in the ICSTS Northern Regional.
