GOSHEN (Sat., Dec. 20, 2008) - Junior Seth Kauffman and seniors Mark DeLeeuw and Jordan Weaver combined for 53 points as the more experienced Bethany Christian Bruins handled the Couriers 66-47 in Bethany Christian Invitational championship.
Jordan Bontrager led the Couriers with 19 points but the team could not overcome 23 turnovers in the final.
Kauffman had 22 points, DeLeeuw 18 and Weaver 13 for the champions (4-3).
In the 11:30 semifinal avenged an earlier loss and defeated Elkhart Christian 60-50. The Couriers committed 23 turnovers but the Eagles had even more problems with 28 miscues.
Bontrager paced the Couriers with 21 points while Evan Stutzman added 16 and Judson Yoder 13. The point totals were career highs for Bontrager and Yoder.
Jess Alexander's 12 led the Eagles. Kyle Revella and Drew Lyon each added 10.
Bethany beat Lakeland Christian 66-45 in the first semifinal. Lakeland Christian (4-4) went on to edge Elkhart Christian (2-5) 53-48 in the consolation game.
The 4-3 Couriers play next on Friday, January 2 at 1:30 p.m. against Lakeland Christian. The game begins the two-day, round-robin Cougar Classic at Lakeland Christian in Winona Lake. For the fifth straight year, the Couriers and Cougars are joined by Trinity of South Bend and the Huntington Eagles, a homeschool team.
