MISHAWAKA (Tues., Jan. 6, 2009) - Judson Yoder's three free throws and Evan Stutzman's two free throws in the final 36 seconds secured a 59-51 Courier win at Granger Christian.The Couriers roared to 6-0 and 20-3 leads in the first half. At one point, they scored 14 consecutive points on the way to a 36-12 halftime advantage.
The lead was 42-18 midway through the third quarter when most of the starters were taken out. By the time the starters returned with 6:30 left in the fourth, the lead had narrowed to 44-33. The Knights continued to claw back and got within 52-49 on Travis Thomas's free throws with 1:26 left. The Couriers scored their final 7 points at the line and held the Knights to a field goal by Joey Steenbeke.
Eight Couriers contributed to a very balanced scoring attack. Evan Stutzman led with 13 points. Dustin Yoder, John Miller and Jordan Bontrager added 9 apiece. Judson Yoder (shooter in photo) grabbed 6 rebounds, Tyler Eash (#22 in photo) passed out 4 assists and Bontrager blocked 2 shots.
Thomas led the Knights with 17 points. Scottie Kane added 12 and Steenbeke 10.
The Couriers (6-5) return home for the first time in 23 days when they host the Benton Bucks Thursday. The Benton Bucks are a homeschool/club team from the Goshen area.
