GOSHEN (Sat., Jan. 31, 2009) - In a makeup game rescheduled from January 16, the Trinity Titans withstood Courier rallies in the third and fourth quarters and downed the Couriers 46-40.
The Titans came out strong in the first half on the way to a 22-14 halftime lead. Then, Dustin Yoder opened up the third quarter with a three pointer and John Miller added a two at 5:01 to draw the Couriers win three at 22-19. After Trinity's Mike Dits' field goal, Evan Stutzman scored the game's next four points at the line and the Couriers trailed by only one, 24-23, with 2:18 left in the third period. The Titans scored the next four points for a 28-23 edge going into the fourth.
In the fourth the Titans twice extended their lead to 10 points. Trailing 43-33 with only 2 minutes left, Yoder started another Courier rally with a trey. Stutzman added a field goal and the deficit was 5 points (43-38) with 49 seconds left. John Zwerneman came back with a two for the Titans before Jesse Yoder's two made the score 45-40 with 19 seconds on the board. The Couriers were forced to foul and the Titans' Nick Scott hit one of two free throws with 2.7 seconds left to secure the victory.
Mike Dits and Matt Keenan put up 11 points apiece for the 13-5 Titans. Scott, who scored 36 points in a 54-51 win over the Couriers January 3, was held to 6 points.
Stutzman was the only double-digit scorer for the Couriers with 15 points. Dustin Yoder added 8.
Judson Yoder scored 10 points as the JV Couriers (11-1) gritted out a 32-22 win.
Bethany Christian (7-6) visit the 10-9 Couriers Tuesday night. The Couriers get another chance against the Titans in the semifinals of the ICSTS North Regionals at Trinity, February 28. Neither team has swept the season series since the Couriers won three in their undefeated 2005-2006 season.
