The ICSTS playoff pairings are set; Couriers open with longtime rival Trinity

The 2008-09 Indiana Christian State Championship Series (ICSTS) tournament pairings were drawn last Friday. Nineteen boys teams and 13 girls teams will compete for a spot in the state finals in Lafayette on Saturday, March 7, 2009.

A new boys champion will be crowned with the departure of Covenant Christian (DeMotte) to the IHSAA. Horizon Christian and Clinton Christian were also in the 2008 Final Four.

The Couriers begin tournament play against North regional host Trinity of South Bend at 9:30 am, February 28. The winner plays the Lakeland Christian-Benton Bucks/Granger Christian winner at 3 pm that Saturday.

I've entered the boys tournament pairings in easy-to-read bracket format on BracketMaker.com. Click on the link I have provided here, then select ICSTS Boys Basketball Tournament: www.bracketmaker.com/find.cfm?location=IN&sport=Basketball

I hope to update the results during the tournament. Although the Couriers do not have a girls team, I will try to put the girls bracket on BracketMaker, too. (I have done this. Go to this link: www.bracketmaker.com/find.cfm?location=IN&sport=Girls%20Basketball and select 2009 ICSTS Girls Basketball Tournament.)

Beginning today, Tuesday, December 9, 2008, I will be putting a link to the brackets in "My Favorite Links" in the lefthand sidebar of this blog. This link will not get buried like a link within a post.

The Couriers are in their 25th season playing Lakeland Christian. They have defeated the Cougars 12 straight and lead the series 28-25. The Trinity series has been much closer with each team winning at least 1 game each of the last 5 years but the Couriers hold on to a 25-20 advantage.

Clinton leads the series with Lakewood 17-9. The Couriers won the first 8 meetings but the two teams have split the last 18. The teams play just once a year now that Lakewood Park has joined the IHSAA. For the first eight years both teams played in the ACSI State Tournament. It is a lesser rivalry than it used to be.
