GOSHEN (Sat., Nov. 29, 2008) - Jordan Bontrager tallied 14 points and blocked 2 shots as the Couriers downed Hamilton 53-42 to win their fourth-straight season opener.
Bontrager scored 12 points and senior Jesse Yoder 7 during a 32-21 run by the Couriers in the second and third quarters. The Mariners led 11-10 at the first break and 17-15 with 6:11 left in the second quarter but could pull closer than six points in the final period.
Yoder finished with 11 points, senior Evan Stutzman 9 points and 7 rebounds and junior John Miller 9 points and 4 assists.
The Couriers opened the season for the first time on their home court. Last year's opener was at Hamilton.
The Elkhart County Hawks visit Clinton (1-0) Thursday. The two squads have not met since the 2001-02 season. The Couriers hold a 4-0 edge in the series.
The Couriers junior varsity beat Hamilton in their opener 30-24.
