Couriers ousted from tourney, season over

SOUTH BEND (Fri., Mar. 2, 2007) – For the first time since joining the ICSTS in the 2004-05 season, the Couriers will not be going to Indianapolis for the “Final Four.”

Covenant Christian downed the Couriers 51-43 in the Northwest Regional final at Trinity. Three Knights combined to score the last seven points of the night at the foul line. Todd M.’s two buckets with 1:29 and 1:15 left in the contest had narrowed the Knights lead to one at 44-43.

In the first half, Couriers looked ready to reverse their fortunes after a 63-56 loss at DeMotte February 10. In that game, the Knights led 20-4 late in the first quarter. This time, Todd (6 points), Caleb M. (4) and Carl M. (2) paced the Couriers to a 12-7 lead at the first stop. They continued to lead 24-23 at the intermission before the Knights began their charge in the third.

The Couriers’ last lead was 26-25 with 7:21 to go in the third. The Knights led 38-33 heading into the final period. The lead grew to eight (43-35) with 3:22 left in the contest but the Couriers made a final 8-1 run before being forced to foul.

Todd M. tallied 23 points for the Couriers (13-8) to move past Arnell Yoder into seventh place with 956 career points. Fellow junior Caleb M. added 10. Reserve guard Cory M. is the team’s only senior.

Senior guard Nick D. led the Knights (16-1) with 21 points, 13 in the second half. Senior center John V. put up 12 for the winners. The Knights return to Indianapolis for the second consecutive year Saturday to face the Benton Bucks, winners of the Northern Regional.
