DEMOTTE (Sat., Feb. 14, 2009) - A flagrant foul in the game's final minute benefitted host Covenant Christian enroute to a 51-47 win over the Couriers.
To his surprise, Dustin Yoder was tagged for a flagrant foul with the Couriers down 48-46 and 33.5 seconds remaining. The Knights' Alex Anderson hit both free throws and the Couriers could draw no closer.
In the second quarter the Couriers had built a 28-20 lead. The Knights came back to take a 40-38 lead entering the fourth. The game was knotted on seven occasions with the Couriers' Jordan Bontrager scoring on a layup to secure the final tie at 46-46 with 1:20 left in the contest.
Mark Bowers and Evan DeKock tallied 14 points each for the Knights (10-6). Anderson added 10 points and 8 rebounds for the winners.
Dustin Yoder managed 12 points, Evan Stutzman 11 and Bontrager 10 for the Couriers, now 12-11. Jesse Yoder added 5 assists.
The Couriers JV (13-2) edged Covenant Christian 42-39. Covenant fell to 11-1. Justin Stutzman scored 10 points and Justin Horst 8 for the Couriers. Horst hit two clinching free throws with 9.6 seconds to go in the game.
Both teams host White's Institute of Wabash Tuesday night.
