Couriers snap losing streak, down Wildcats



GOSHEN (Sat., Feb. 7, 2009) - The Couriers broke a two-game home winning streak, beating the Howe Military Cadet Wildcats 58-41.

With a 21-point second quarter, the Couriers avoided what was otherwise a close game. The Couriers led 16-14 after one period. After the 21-6 second period, both teams netted 21 points in the second half.

Wildcat senior Karl Vaughn, averaging 23 points per game, dropped in 18 points and grabbed 8 rebounds and 8 steals. Graham McLaren added 8 rebounds and 5 steals for the Wildcats (2-10).

Five Couriers scored at least 8 points. Dustin Yoder and Atlee Bender paced them with 13 apiece, a career high for Bender in a reserve role. Jordan Bontrager (top photo), Jesse Yoder and Evan Stutzman added 8 points each. Bontrager finished with 7 rebounds, Dustin Yoder 6 assists and John Miller (leading charge, bottom photo) 6 steals.

The team converted on 24-of-52 field goal tries for 46 percent and 7-of-9 free throws for 78 percent. The Wildcats shot only 28 percent from the field on 15 of 56.

The JV nearly matched the varsity in point output, easily handling the Wildcats 55-30. Justin Stutzman tallied 13 points, Judson Yoder 12 and Tyler Eash 10 for the 12-2 Couriers.

The varsity plays its fifth-straight home game Tuesday night versus Granger Christian. Both teams are in the ICSTS North Regional at the end of the month. The Knights are 1-2 against the field while the Couriers are 5-2.
