AUBURN (Sat., Jan. 10, 2009) - Evan Stutzman's three-pointer at the final horn rimmed out and the host Lakewood Park Panthers survived a scare from the rival Couriers 47-46.
The Panthers, 14th ranked in 1A, never led by more than 6 points in the contest. Despite 22 turnovers, the Couriers held a number of leads including their biggest at 44-40 with 2:14 remaining in the game.
Brock Taulbee broke a 46-46 tie with 1:06 left for the Panthers' final margin of victory. Then, the Couriers worked the clock for a final shot.
Stutzman led all scorers with 22 points. Dustin Yoder added 14 but no other Couriers scored more than 4 points.
Tommy Strine and Casey Weaver had 8 points each for Panthers (6-2). Taulbee dropped in 7 as every Panther who saw action scored.
Lakewood Park handed the Couriers (5-1) their first loss, 36-26, in the JV contest.
Community Baptist (3-1) visits the Couriers (7-6) Tuesday night. The Cougars have not traveled to face the Couriers since January 21, 2000. The Couriers won that game at the Grace Brethren Church gym in Osceola by a 53-44 count.
