Two wins equals trip to state finals

SOUTH BEND (Sat., Mar. 1, 2008) - The Couriers managed only 46 points against the young Trinity Titans but prevailed 46-31 to capture the ICSTS Northern Regional championship on the Titans' home court.

After building a 13-5 lead through one quarter, the Couriers (22-3) never were seriously challenged again but could not seem to put the game away until late in the game. Todd Martin tallied 25 points to increase his career total to 1,380. He needs 50 points to tie Jeremy Yoder (1991-95) for second place on the Couriers' all -time scoring list.

Junior forward Mike Dits and junior center Matt Keenan both netted 10 points for Trinity (15-12). The Titans reached the title game by dumping the Benton Bucks 57-43 in a mid-morning semifinal. The Titans could return the bulk of their team for 2008-09. Starting guard Kevin McShane, forward Josh Cramer and seldom-used center Kyle Hoover will graduate from the current squad.

At noon, the Couriers steamrolled to a 40-13 halftime lead and eliminated Lakeland Christian 55-44 in the second semifinal. Evan Stutzman finished with 10 points for the Couriers. The Cougars' Jared Franklin scored 13 points and Chris Valentine 11.

The Couriers prepare to play defending state champion Covenant Christian (10-11), winners of the Northwest Regional, at 2 p.m. at Anderson University Saturday. The Central and South Regional winners square off at 12:30 p.m. with the championship contest planned for 8:15 at Anderson University's O.C. Lewis Gymnasium. Directions to the state finals site will be available on the Clinton Christian School web site.
