
ELKHART (Saturday, December 8, 2007) - The Couriers outscored Elkhart Christian 22-0 at the free-throw line, defeating the Eagles 71-59.
The Eagles soared to an early 12-3 lead before Mike Troyer (8 points) and Todd Martin (2) spearheaded a 10-0 Courier run. The Couriers held a narrow 20-19 lead at the first break.
Elkhart Christian’s Dan Bruckner and Chris Hovan combined for 13 points in the first five minutes of the second quarter for a 32-30 Eagles lead. Hovan scored again with 34 seconds remaining until halftime but the Couriers held a 40-34 halftime advantage.
Four Eagles scored in the third period to cut the Couriers lead to five (53-48). Hovan’s field goal 49 seconds into the fourth quarter drew the Eagles within one at 53-52 but the Eagles could not get closer than six the rest of the way.
Mike Troyer finished 8-of-9 at the free-throw line and paced the Couriers (3-1) with 24 points. Carl Martin added 18, Todd Martin 13 and Evan Stutzman 11. The Couriers made 22-of-28 free throws in the game to the Eagles 0-for-1.
Hovan dropped in 20 points and Bruckner 18 for the Eagles (3-1). Devin Blankinship finished with 10.
Todd Martin scored his 1,000th career point in the game and held the Eagles’ second-leading scorer Joel Heare to six points.
Elkhart Christian’s junior varsity edged the Couriers 47-46 in overtime. Jordan Bontrager topped the Couriers (3-2) with 14 points while John Miller contributed 11. Jess Alexander scored 12 for the winners.
