
HAMILTON (Thurs., Nov. 29, 2007) - The Couriers varsity boys basketball team made 26-of-40 free throws to win their season opener at Hamilton 65-56.
Carl Martin topped the Couriers with 17 points, including a layup at halftime for a 30-27 Courier lead. Mike Troyer added 16 points and Todd Martin 15 for the winners (1-0).
The host Marines led 17-10 after one period but committed 28 fouls to the Couriers' 9. Jake Taulbee had 24 points and Matt Frey for the Marines.
In the junior varsity contest, Matthew Beiler's defense sparked a furious rally in the fourth quarter that fell short by a 36-32 count. John Miller netted 12 points and Jordan Bontrager 9 for the 1-1 Couriers, who had opened the season with a 45-39 win at Lakewood Park November 19.
The Couriers visit First Baptist in Mishawaka tonight and host Bethany Christian at Heritage Middle School in Middlebury.
